New business is all stitched up

Farringdon businesswoman has the Christmas spirit all stitched up.

Elaine Culkin worked in hospitals for over 30 years but after many setbacks with illness she decided to leave work and become her own boss, specialising in niche handmade Christmas jumpers.

Elaine visited theNorth East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) for guidance and it was here she was appointed business adviser Debbie Simpson and Carry on Crafting was born. Elaine said: “I came to the BIC to gain more knowledge on starting my own business. I learnt about business plans and book keeping. Debbie was great and I found the workshops I attended to be of great value, it was the best thing I have ever done.

“When you can’t work because of illness it does nothing for your confidence and I was frustrated that I couldn’t do the things I wanted to so I looked at alternative ways to keep myself busy, something that could work around me. You get knocked down but you must get back up, whatever life throws at you, one must throw some back and carry on.

“I saw a need in the market for novelty Christmas jumpers. I love being creative and the festive season is alive all through the year in my house. The jumpers have been selling since September now and it’s wonderful to see people get as much delight from wearing. The best thing about self employment is when I am not well and find myself having a bad day at least I am at home and I am comfortable.

“There is no time to pity yourself there are so many people out there worse off so make the most of your talents and enjoy what you do.”

Debbie Simpson, business adviser, added:

“Elaine has a real positive air about her and I think it’s so inspiring to watch her not let anything hold her back. She is so passionate and you can see she really enjoys the creativity and fun side of the product.

“I wish her all the success in the future.”
