Online carpet and flooring growth shows changing habits

A 300% growth in sales at online flooring retailer, Flooring Megastore (, could indicate a significant shift in the market, similar to that experienced in the electrical goods sector.

The increase in sales is the result of cost savings for consumers, alongside service speed and convenience, says Dan Foskett, Managing Director of Flooring Megastore.

He said: “Customers are also finding that there are huge savings to be had when buying online and more and more people are following this growing trend, with our online sales having grown by 300% in the last six months alone.

“By making the service quick and convenient, with fast distribution of both samples and goods, we find that many customers prefer it to physically entering a store.”

One of the key elements is that customers do not have to make one journey to view and collect samples to take home, then another when they have made their decision.

Mr Foskett continued: “Online retailers have slowly adapted to ensure their customer service can challenge that which is delivered face-to-face on the high street and this has resulted in a growth in consumer confidence and a big difference to sales.

“There will always be a place for physical home furnishing outlets, but it is clear that online shopping is becoming more popular, advanced and trusted, changing the way people buy all manner of goods.

“We have seen recently in the home electrical market, with the demise of Comet and the troubles faced by Jessops, that there is a shift taking place and, while I believe the changes in the home furnishing market will develop more slowly, but no less inevitably.”
