Bdaily goes behind the business with Adam Smith, Managing Director of North East-based Recruitment company, £SSK Recruitment Limited.

What does your organisation do?

SSK Recruitment are a general recruitment agency who have a particular focus on construction, engineering, industrial and contact centre recruitment. We cover the whole of the UK and from opening our doors in March 2018 we have already secured the business of 5 national clients. The Business was set up by Adam Smith ‘’ Managing Director, and Bradley Saunders ‘’ Director ‘’ – Bradley a former professional boxer who has several business interests recently retired from the sport and has an abundance of contacts here in the North East so we have been very lucky to have a few doors opened for us. Our aim is to be an extension of our clients business and we look to work within companies budgets, so we can tailor packages to suit our clients. We recently won a contract to supply Asbestos Removal Operatives throughout the UK and a large contact centre contract here in the North East which will be creating over 100 jobs in the region, so it’s exciting times here at SSK Recruitment and we are looking to add to the 5 staff that we have working for us at the moment.

What key challenges has your company recently faced?

The key challenge was setting things up from scratch, having worked in recruitment for a number of years and having experience managing branches, I thought naturally the next step would be to open up my own agency, but there a lot of behind the scenes problems that you face, it was important to get the right factoring company on board early so that our temporary workforce were paid on time and now entering our 3rd month the branch is thriving.

What is your biggest achievement over the past 12 months?

Our biggest achievement so far as we go in to month 3 is the fact we have 5 national companies on our books now, it’s opening a lot of doors for us with other companies in the construction industry in particular, that we can say we are working with the likes of USL, Premier Traffic Management, Kaifer, Dynasafe and Amianto Limited, who we now have work with all over the UK

What is your most important focus for the year, and what do you hope to achieve?

My main focus for this year is to get our contact centre account we recently acquired up to capacity, there is over 100 jobs to be created so it would really help the business grow and also the Asbestos market is extremely busy over the summer period, so it’s about making sure we have the right candidates for the demand our clients.

What excites you most about your industry and business?

What excites me most about the recruitment industry, is that no two days are ever the same. You get out what you put in and at the moment we are seeing the rewards of that hard work.

What do you wish you’d known when starting out?

One thing I wish I had known more about before I set up was the back office side of the business, until you run your own business you don’t deal with banks, factoring companies, accountants etc, there is a lot of work you have to do behind the scenes that you wouldn’t normally be involved with when you are working for a company, so it’s just getting your head round all that side of the business.

What will be the “next big thing” in your industry, and how do you plan to handle it?

Contact Centre recruitment seems to be thriving at the minute, certainly here in the North East – We recently took on a recruitment specialist from the contact centre industry and our plan is to assist companies with assessment days and interviews to take pressure of internal teams. We have 100 jobs to fill within the sector but we have the right people on board to cope with those numbers. Also we have started working with a lot of asbestos companies of late, something I had no previous experience with from roles I have had in the past, but it’s really big business at the moment and it is enabling us to make plans for adding more staff. We want to bring in consultants from the construction sector as the industry is flying at the moment so I would be interested in speaking with experienced consultants.
